How do I set up my Outlook Express to read my e-mail?

These instructions will provide you with the necessary steps to manage your e-mail using Microsoft Outlook Express (version 5.5 or higher), using Valley TechNologies e-mail servers (ref. version W).

It is highly recommended to change your password immediately.  You can access your e-mail over the internet from any web-enabled computer and change your password, as well as access your e-mail when not at your own computer.  Click here for web e-mail instructions.

1. Open MS Outlook Express (version 6 used the example), either from your desktop or from your Start Button / Programs menu.

2. Click menu: TOOLS / ACCOUNTS / ADD / MAIL...

3. Click the Mail tab and select, click Add and select Mail.

Note: if you already have an existing account showing here that you need to revise the settings, it will be easiest to follow these steps to create a brand new account per these instructions, then go back and "Remove" the old account. You will not lose any e-mails that you have downloaded to your inbox.

4. In the box, type the name you want to have appear in the "From" line of your outgoing messages, and click "Next >" to continue.

4. Type the e-mail address for your e-mail account, and click "Next".

6. The incoming mail server is a POP3 server. The incoming mail server is mail.yourdomain.com (replace the "yourdomain.com" with your actual domain name).   The outgoing mail (SMTP) server is dictated by your Internet service provider (ISP).  Check their documentation or their website to verify this information, and click "Next".

7. The account name is the full e-mail address you entered in Step 6 above.  The password is the one created in the webmail setup.

REMEMBER: To change your password you must also change it in the webmail program or you will not receive e-mails.  Your e-mail administrator cannot see your password.  If you forget your password, contact your e-mail administrator to re-set it.

Do not check the box for SPA. Click "Next".

8.  Click Finish on the next screen to complete the set up.

9. Send an e-mail to a friend or colleague, and let them know to respond to it to test out both sending and receiving the e-mail.  If you have any problems, contact your e-mail administrator.

10. Finally, when completed, return to your email account. Highlight the email and click properties (on the right of the box).

a) go to the "Advanced" tab
b) at the bottom of the page you will see a "Delivery" area. Click leave on server (we recommend no longer that a few days) and also click remove from server after (about) 2-4 days and click remove from server when deleted from "Deleted Items".
